ABB Static Voltage Compensator Unit 501 & 502

CLIENT:

SaskPower / ABB

LOCATION:

Points North, SK

ROLE:

Field Lead TeleControl

PROJECT YEAR:

2012

This project was part of an ongoing effort to stabilize the Northern grid. One ABB Static Voltage Compensators (SVC) was already installed in a previous project. The current scope included installing two more SVCs. Both SVCs were connected to the main control building with a fiber optic cable, and RuggedCom (now Siemens) node equipment. This solution saved considerable time and money compared to pulling hundreds of I/O wires. After the project an IRIG-B clock was added to each SVC to assist with ongoing troubleshooting. For commissioning an ABB representative simulated the operations of the SVC, and TeleControl verified the signals at the station RTU.
