LOCATION:

Aberdeen & Martensville, SK

ROLE:

Site Lead TeleControl

PROJECT YEAR:

2014

As part of the Saskatoon Area Reinforcement (SAR) project, two new transmission stations—Aberdeen and Martensville—were built. As a member of the SaskPower TeleControl crew, I personally led the installation and commissioning of the entire Communication Protection & Control (CP&C) fiber optic network, IRIG-B timing, including all nodes, connections to Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), and links to remote IEDs located within the station apparatus. Additionally, I led the installation and commissioning of the General Electric JMUX node, which connected the CP&C network to the external network. Tapping into the live network required coordination across the entire TeleControl team, who were deployed at various sites simultaneously to perform the work.

The SCADA system for this project was unique in two ways: it was from a different manufacturer than the rest of our system, and it was procured as a turnkey solution from an external vendor. This removed the SCADA from the site lead role but required additional commissioning support and coordination.
