Annual Power Plant Maintenance

CLIENT:

SaskPower

LOCATION:

Cory, SK

ROLE:

Field Technologist

PROJECT YEAR:

2007-2011

Cory Cogeneration is a 234 MW combined-cycle natural gas power plant that uses two turbines plus a steam turbine. Between 2007 and 2011, it was not part of the SaskPower Company fleet and contracted maintenance for its Generator Step-Up (GSU) transformers, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), and associated switchgear. As part of the crew, responsibilities included permitting, isolation switching, maintenance testing, and restoration switching. While the plant was online, duties involved Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) for the transformers and InfraRed (IR) imaging of the entire plant’s electrical system. A notable achievement in preventative maintenance occurred during an IR imaging scan when a hot spot on a 138 kV lightning arrestor was discovered. Personal expertise identified the difficult-to-detect hotspot on this single point of failure, as confirmed by experts at FLIR.
