FERTILIZER SUBSTATION AND PLANT EXPANSION

CLIENT:

Yara International

LOCATION:

Belle Plaine, SK

ROLE:

Junior Electrical Designer

PROJECT YEAR:

2009

Increasing the electrical system by 10 MVA was required to support the demand for the planned plant expansion. The electrical scope included adding one 138 kV transformer to the customer-owned substation, four 5 kV motors, and approximately twenty 600 V ancillary loads. From preliminary design to commissioning and as-builting, over 1,200 hours were personally invested in the project. Much of the design was completed from a job trailer located onsite, which offered the advantage of easy access to the library of existing plant drawings and documentation, the ability to quickly field-measure existing areas of the facility we were connecting to, and the opportunity to communicate with the customer in person. The final drawing package included modifications to the existing substation, approximately 1 km of underground 13.8 kV cable through the plant, two new medium voltage transformers, one new switchgear building, modifications to the existing switchgear building, and numerous electrical panels. Being onsite from start to finish on a large project was a golden opportunity to learn as a junior designer.
