The scope of work included trenching ~500 meters of fiber in conduit through the Canadian Shield, connecting the OPGW dead-end structure to the communications building. Installing and commissioning a Power Line Carrier (PLC) to fiber JMUX repeater, which was used for protective tripping, remote alarming, and as part of a cellular backup for an RTU at another site. The project’s completion was jeopardized by the spring thaw and was part of a publicized deal between SaskPower, SaskTel, and Cameco.
The construction required a five-man crew and twenty-three heli-lifts, including a mini-excavator. I led all construction and commissioning efforts, including advanced logistical planning and safety considerations, which were amplified by the remote conditions and unpredictable weather.
