Low Profile Canadian Compliance Review

CLIENT:

Bucyrus

LOCATION:

Pittsburg, PA, USA

ROLE:

Technical Specialist

PROJECT YEAR:

2010

Agrium was procuring a Bucyrus coal miner for use at a Canadian potash mine. A team of five, representing Agrium’s engineering, operations and maintenance, and management departments, traveled to Bucyrus headquarters during the preliminary design stage to tailor the design to specific needs. One major challenge was the use of 1000V as low voltage in American mining, compared to Canadian mining, which uses 600V and considers anything greater than 750V as high voltage by legislation, complicating future maintenance. The role involved reviewing systems greater than 600V to ensure they conformed to Canadian standards, including the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA M421 (Use of Electricity in Mines), and CSA SPE-1000 (Model Code for the Field Evaluation of Electrical Equipment).
